85 per cent of Alberta human rights complaints employment-related: Report

Commission’s annual report shows employers are most common infringers of human rights

The Alberta Human Rights Commission has released its 2008-09 annual report. The report contains a breakdown of the percentage of complaints filed by grounds of discrimination and by area of service, such as employment, tenancy, publications and goods and services, accommodations and facilities. Noteworthy for employers is the report’s finding that 84 per cent of the 799 new complaints in 2008-2009 involved employment practices, with another one per cent were concerned with applications and advertisements for jobs. The three most common grounds of complaint were physical disability (35 per cent), gender (20 per cent) and mental disability (15 per cent).

The average number of days required to resolve a complaint in 2008-09 was 404, down from 438 in 2007-08.
