Old labour relations section renamed and expanded to include more employment lawyers
The Labour Relations Section of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) has a new name to reflect a broader scope.
The OBA announced April 18 the section would be renamed the Labour and Employment Law Section. The makeup of the section will also change. Two new officer positions, vice-chair (labour) and vice-chair (employment), have been created to assist the chair and work with labour and employment practitioners.
The changes were the result of discussions between members of the section’s executive and employment lawyers who weren’t members of the old section.
A transitional working group was created to determine how the new section can increase membership and address the needs of existing members. The group will meet quarterly over the next year and will include the vice-chair (employment), members of the executive and employment lawyers both inside and outside the section who want to be involved.
For the balance of the 2007-2008 term, arbitrator Laura Trachuk will act as the vice-chair (labour) and employment lawyer Jonathan Dye of Heenan Blaikie LLP will serve as the vice-chair (employment). A new section executive will be elected on June 30, 2008, at the same time as the annual elections of the OBA’s other sections.
