WINNIPEG (CP) -- Eight people have been fired after an internal investigation into the bad work habits of some City of Winnipeg building inspectors.
Another seven people have been suspended after the probe earlier this year into Winnipeg's property and development department that followed reports of staff slacking off on the job.
The internal investigation was triggered after a citizens group paid a private investigator to tail and record the inspectors.
The group says videos showed the employees doing personal activities during work hours, such as long shopping trips, coffee breaks, visiting the gym and blowing snow.
Mike Ruta, the city's interim chief administrative officer, says there were also instances of theft resulting from fraudulent mileage claims.
Another four employees have received written reprimands and one has been given a non-disciplinary letter.
Ruta said the private investigation helped speed up disciplinary action.
``The video definitely assisted greatly our ability to discuss this with the people involved,'' he said.
``We are deeply disappointed to have found there was truth to the allegations.''
